    The Effect of the Use of Sexed Semen on Reproductive Traits and Sex Ratio of Black and White Calves

    Sperm sexing is a relatively new biotechnological procedure which offers us the possibility to choose the offspring sex. This method is widely used today in the insemination of the dairy cattle breeds and it is based on the difference in total DNA quantity between X and Y chromosome spermatozoa. In this research paper we have analysed the fertility, sex ratio and characteristics of female Black and White breed calves inseminated by the sexed sperm produced by 6 bulls on 6 commercial farms of the PK Belgrade. Conception rate was 44% with average gestation length of 274.9 days. Average calf birth weight was 36.75 kg. The stillbirths and twinning rates were 7.16 and 1.13%, respectively. Artificial insemination by sexed sperm assessed by c2 test highly significantly (P0.05) gestation length. Regardless the low conception rate, the application of sexed sperm in dairy cattle breeding is very significant since it enables the breeders to use the best replacement female animals what may result in the improvement of genetic basis of breeding stock

    Long-range potentials and (n1)d+ns(n-1)d+ns molecular resonances in an ultracold rydberg gas

    We have calculated long-range molecular potentials of the 0g+0_g^{+}, 0u0_u^{-} and 1u1_u symmetries between highly-excited rubidium atoms. Strong np+npnp+np potentials characterized by these symmetries are important in describing interaction-induced phenomena in the excitation spectra of high npnp Rydberg states. Long-range molecular resonances are such phenomena and they were first reported in S.M. Farooqi {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 91} 183002. One class of these resonances occurs at energies corresponding to excited atom pairs (n1)d+ns(n-1)d+ns. Such resonances are attributed to \ell-mixing due to Rydberg-Rydberg interactions so that otherwise forbidden molecular transitions become allowed. We calculate molecular potentials in Hund's case (c), use them to find the resonance lineshape and compare to experimental results.Comment: 11 pages, 7 figure

    Review of eating disorders and oxytocin receptor polymorphisms.

    BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Oxytocin, a nine amino acid peptide synthesised in the hypothalamus, has been widely recognised for its role in anxiolysis, bonding, sociality, and appetite. It binds to the oxytocin receptor (OXTR)-a G-protein coupled receptor-that is stimulated by the actions of oestrogen both peripherally and centrally. Studies have implicated OXTR genotypes in conferring either a risk or protective effect in autism, schizophrenia, and eating disorders (ED). There are numerous DNA variations of this receptor, with the most common DNA variation being in the form of the single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). Two OXTR SNPs have been most studied in relation to ED: rs53576 and rs2254298. Each SNP has the same allelic variant that produces genotypes AA, AG, and GG. In this critical review we will evaluate the putative role of rs53576 and rs2254298 SNPs in ED. Additionally, this narrative review will consider the role of gene-environment interactions in the development of ED pathology. FINDINGS: The OXTR SNPs rs53576 and rs2254298 show independent associations between the A allele and restrictive eating behaviours. Conversely, the G allele of the OXTR rs53576 SNP is associated with binging behaviours, findings that were also evident in neuroanatomy. One study found the A allele of both OXTR SNPs to confer risk for more severe ED symptomatology while the G allele conferred some protective effect. An interaction between poor maternal care and rs2254298 AG/AA genotype conferred increased risk for binge eating and purging in women. CONCLUSIONS: Individual OXTR SNP are unlikely in themselves to explain complex eating disorders but may affect the expression of and/or effectiveness of the OXTR. A growing body of G x E work is indicating that rs53576G homozygosity becomes disadvantageous for later mental health under early adverse conditions but further research to extend these findings to eating pathology is needed. The GWAS approach would benefit this area of knowledge

    The Assessment of Breeding Value of First Farrowed Sows by the Method of Selection Indices

    The goal of this research paper was to assess the breeding value of first farrowed Swedish Landrace sows by the means of selection indices method. The traits on the basis of which the breeding value of animals was assessed are following: daily liveweight gain, average thickness of collected back fat measured at five sites and number of liveborn piglets in the first litter. The liveweight gain and carcass quality traits determined at the end of performance test were corrected for the body mass of 100kg by the method of basic indexes and following mean values were determined: for corrected daily liveweight gain (KZDP) 499.92g/day and for corrected average collected backfat thickness (KSL) 20.01mm. The first farrowed sows on average produced 8.09 liveborn piglets in the litter. Studying the effect of the gilts` birth year and season on KZDP and KSL it was determined that the gilts` birth year and season had no statistically significant influence (P>0.05) on KZDP variation but they had a statistically significant effect on KSL (P0.05) on BZPL, while the KZDP class and the age at first farrowing had a statistically significant effect on the variability of these trait (P<0.05; P<0.01). All studied traits varied statistically significantly (P<0.01) under the impact of the gilts` sire or dam. Heritability coefficients were: h2= 0.402 for KZDP, h2= 0.261 for KSL and h2= 0.177 for BZPL. The relation between KZDP and KSL was of a medium strength both at phenotype and genetic levels (rph=0.491; rg=0.411), while the relation of these traits with BZPL did not exist, except for the genetic relationship between KSL and KZDP which was of a medium strength (rg=0.252). Three equations for the selection indexes were constructed among which as the most optimal was chosen the one which includes all three traits (KZDP, KSL and BZPL) and whose correlation coefficent of selection index and aggregate genotype was rIAG = 0.5473

    In the last two decades, the liberalization of the electricity markets have been established in order to increase efficiency, harmonize and reduce electricity prices, make a better use of resources, give customers the right to choose their supplier and provide customers with a better service. This change made the electricity market competitive and introduced several new subjects. In this paper, we study one of these subjects: Electricity Trading Company (ETC) and its daily trading process. We present a linear mathematical model of total daily profit maximization subject to flow constraints. It is assumed that the demand and supply are known and some of them are arranged. Possible transmission capacities are known but also additional capacities can be purchased. All trading, transmission prices and amounts are subject of auctions. First, we present energy trading problem as directed multiple-source and multiple-sink network and then model it using linear programming. Also, we provide one realistic example which is slightly changed in order to save confidentiality of the given data

    Reconstructive Procedures after Total Gastrectomy for Gastric Cancer

    Till this day, there are more than 60 described surgical procedures of the intestinal reconstructions after a total gastrectomy. In 1897, Schlatter reconstructed the digestive tract by creating a termino-lateral esophagojejunostomies that was the first successful total gastrectomy. Many of the total gastrectomy pioneers did the reconstruction by esophagoduodenostomy or by forming a loop esophagojejunostomy. The main reconstruction modalities after a total gastrectomy are a restitution of the intestinal continuity, without a preservation of the duodenal food passage (esophagojejunostomy with a Roux-en-Y configuration) and a restitution of the intestinal continuity with a preservation of the duodenal passage (esophagojejunostomy with Roux-en-Y configuration and forming of the lateral-terminal jejunoduodenal anastomosis double tract and jejunal interposition by Longmire). The surgeries in these categories can be combined with forming of an enteral pouch or a stomach reservoir which would simulate a reservoir of a normal intact stomach. The ideal reconstruction procedure after total gastrectomy should replace all lost functions of the stomach. Preservation of duodenal transit with replacement of the jejunal segment, the so-called physiological route, is now believed to be preferential for postoperative nutritional condition, prevents persistent postgastrectomy syndrome, and improves the quality of life. Reconstructive procedures which allow duodenal passage should be regarded as a key to physiological reconstruction

    Inter-test reproducibility of the lung clearance index measured by multiple breath washout

    Background: Traditionally the inter-test reproducibility of the lung clearance index (LCI) has been described in terms of absolute change (e.g. 1 unit), however, if LCI is more variable at higher values, interpretation of absolute changes in LCI may be biased. Aims: We assessed whether inter-test reproducibility depends on the LCI value and whether relative changes are better suited to define reproducibility. Methods: Multiple breath nitrogen washout (MBW) was measured at baseline, 1, 3, 6, 9 and 12 months in children aged 3-6 years with CF, and age-matched healthy controls. Reproducibility of the LCI between each pair of measurements was described using Bland Altman limits of agreement (LA), Coefficient of repeatability (CR), and relative change. Results: 148 children contributed 619 MBW measurements. The within-subject SD of the LCI between paired measurements, a measure of variability, increased as the absolute LCI increased. Therefore, using LA or the CR to determine thresholds of inter-test reproducibility will over-estimate clinically relevant changes in patients with higher LCI values. Using relative changes, a physiologically or clinically relevant change in healthy preschool children was calculated to be +/- 15%, whereas it was +/- 30% in CF children. The average relative change in both health and CF was independent of the time interval between measurements. Conclusions: Since LCI variability is proportional to its mean, interpretation of absolute changes will be biased. Changes in LCI greater than +/- 15% can be considered greater than the biological variability of the test in health and may help to identify patients with clinically relevant changes in lung function
